Polatr Vortex 2014
Happy New Year and welcome back!
It was abnormally cold last week in Toronto as we were in the grip of a Polar Vortex. Inspired by the cold core low pressure area, this week’s show is a bit introspective and moody and sounds like: melodic Techno, Acid, Deep House, Tech-House, Electro-Tech, and Bass.
Starting off with a track by Anti Hero off the inaugural Neighbourhood Watch EP the set begins with a moody and melodic techno vibe. Neighbourhood Watch is a loose Toronto collective of electronic music producers who’ve used the proceeds from their monthly Pay-What-You-Can parties to fund this release. The standout track for me is Waterwalker’s (aka Nacho Lovers’ Bruce Trail and Jokers of the Scene’s Anti Hero) DRMT that throws back to the sound of moody Detroit techno and, to me, sounds reminiscent of Drexciya.
With the throwback sound in place, the set dives deeper and goes a bit “UK” with a wistful love song by Disclosure, a remix of the massively popular Need U (100%), and a groovy tech-house remix of Cylcist’s underground hit Shine.
Amino acid, courtesy of Gingy & Bordello sets the stage for a left turn into techno and the broadcast debut of Trance Mulliniks’ Flight Path which charts the course for frosty and mechanical sounding grooves until the end of the show; closing with Flex Rock’s The Art of Mediocrity.
