Last week I was lucky to have DJ Cozmic Cat perform live on In My Room! For those of you not in the know, Cozmic Cat was an established and beloved DJ in Philadelphia before moving to Toronto in the mid 00’s where she quickly climbed the ranks to become one of the city’s most sought-after DJs.
As a promoter, top party rocker and producer, she’s known for her positive energy and her willingness to work with a variety of artists and promoters. A true “working DJ,” she routinely rocks late night warehouse parties, skate rinks, upscale lounges, huge clubs, outdoor festivals and grassroots fundraisers without missing a beat.
Her ability to adapt and thrive as a DJ may be partly due to her eclectic tastes in music. Spinning anything from Classic House, Tech House, Ol’ Skool Hiphop, Dancehall, Funk classics or “the latest booty shaking guilty pop pleasures,” Cozmic Cat has her paws on the pulse of the dance floor. Holding down several monthly residencies at some of the city’s top clubs, her monthly Cherry Bomb event that she hosts alongside DJ Denise Benson was voted Toronto’s Best Women’s Club Event 2007, 2008 and 2009 by Xtra Magazine.
Cozmic Cat’s original productions and remix work reflect her varied musical influences. From her Hip-Hop beats on MC Jazz‘s debut full length album REVOLUTIONS to her recent remix of Amber Long’s “Creepy,” and ProCon’s “Pretty Pony,” (both featured in the set below) Cozmic Cat has a knack for arrangement that’s geared to groove.
In a somewhat unconventional turn, we did the interview first and chatted about her musical influences, her production tools and the Vestax VCI-380, her collaboration with MC Jazz, her remixes and some Toronto talent to watch out for!
The set starts off with a couple of her remixes before heading off into House, Jackin House, UK Garage, Deep House, Tech-House and some pumpin Filtered / Electro-House
